This account book contains records for the years 1772 to 1773 and 1784 t0 1787, when Joseph abandoned his shipping business. Included are cargo lists and shipping rates for various merchants and private individuals. Also included are two incomplete copies of letters, undated, and a copy of a sermon, also undated. There is a typewritten, alphabetized index of names appearing within the volume. Many are well-known Kent County families.

Joseph Middleton ( - ), shipper, and later, farmer from Annapolis, Md., began his career with his brothers William ( - ) and Gilbert ( - ) as a mariner and ship's carpenter. When the Revolutionary War broke out, the three brothers enlisted and served on various barges during part of the war. Later, Gilbert took over his father's inn and hired out boats, while Joseph and William began shipping goods on their own boats in the Chesapeake Bay region.
